Vanessa Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant’s widow, spoke out about the death of her father-in-law, Joe 'Jellybean' Bryant.

Despite a complicated past with her late husband’s parents, on Tuesday, July 16, 42-year-old Vanessa expressed condolences over the passing of her father-in-law when news of his passing came.

«We send our condolences upon hearing the news of my father-in-law's death. We had hoped things would be different. Although the time spent together was short, he was always a kind and pleasant person. Kobe loved him very much. Our prayers go out to the family», - Vanessa wrote in an Instagram Stories post.

The news was first reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer after La Salle University head coach Fran Dunphy confirmed to the publication that Joe had suffered a stroke, which led to his passing at the age of 69, four years after the tragic deaths of Kobe Bryant at 41 and Gianna Bryant at 13.

For many years, it was known that Kobe and his parents did not have the best relationship.

The drama reportedly began when he married his wife almost 20 years ago in 2001. Kobe told the Sentinel that his father did not attend the wedding, although he was not surprised, stating, «I knew he wouldn’t come and see me. He never does». It later became known that Joe did not attend Kobe’s wedding because he was upset that Kobe had married a Latina woman instead of a black woman, which Joe denied.

After some efforts at reconciliation following the birth of their first child, Natalia, 21, in 2003, Kobe and his parents fought over the sale of items from his basketball career in high school and his early days with the Lakers. They claimed they needed to sell the items to buy a house. However, Kobe claimed he never allowed them to do so.

In a 2016 ESPN interview, the Black Mamba revealed that he had not spoken to his parents for three years.

«Our relationship is s**t», - he said. «I say [to them], 'I'll buy you a very nice home,' and the response is 'That's not enough'? And you sell my things?»

Ultimately, Kobe won the case and received an apology from his parents, stating, «We apologize for any misunderstanding and unintended pain we may have caused our son, and thank him for the financial support he has provided us over the years».

Although it is unknown how close they were when Kobe passed away, both Joe and Pam honored the memory of their late son and granddaughter, Kobe and Vanessa’s second daughter, Gianna, during a beautiful memorial at the Staples Center
