Victoria Justice discusses her «complicated» relationship with former Nickelodeon producer Dan Schneider. Two months after the release of the documentary film «Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Children’s Television» on Investigation Discovery, the 31-year-old «Victorious» alum shared her experience working with Schneider in a new interview published on Wednesday, May 15.
«I'm not excusing any of his behavior», - Justice insisted in an interview with Marie Claire, adding: «Ultimately, my relationship with Dan is very complicated: I met him when I was 12 years old, and he’s the person who gave me this big chance. He completely changed my life. Most likely, I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for him, and if he hadn’t seen something special in me. I will always be grateful for that».
The former «Zoey 101» cast member also acknowledged Schneider’s apology, in which he expressed regret for his past behavior on Nickelodeon sets.
«After watching his apology, I think he understands that he did a lot of things wrong», - Justice said, adding: «And I think if he could go back in time, he would do a lot of things differently». However, Justice noted that she is «definitely one of the people on that list» to whom Schneider owes an apology.
Justice got her big break on «Zoey 101» before ultimately landing the role of Tori Vega on «Victorious» on Nickelodeon. Schneider served as a producer on both shows.
Referring to the documentary series «Quiet on Set», - Justice noted that Schneider had a «very big ego» when working on the network’s teen sitcoms. Furthermore, the actress felt that she was «sometimes treated unfairly» while working with Schneider.
«What was very obvious in the documentary film is that Dan had a very big ego, and sometimes that ego overshadowed his better judgment and influenced how he treated people», - Justice noted. «And there were moments when I felt I was being treated unfairly».
During their participation in «Quiet on Set», - several former Nickelodeon cast members and crew members accused Schneider of creating a toxic work environment. As a result, Schneider filed a lawsuit against the producers of the ID documentary. He then responded to the allegations in a statement obtained by E! News.
«There is no doubt that at times I was a bad leader», - Schneider admitted in his statement. «I sincerely apologize and regret this behavior, and will continue to take responsibility for it. I do not object to someone highlighting my failures as a boss, but it is wrong to mislead millions of people into believing that I was in any way involved in the despicable acts committed by child predators»
