Victoria Monet and Usher have joined forces to revive the R&B of the 90s.
The Grammy winner, a 35-year-old singer, released her latest track «SOS (Sex On Sight)» from the upcoming project Jaguar II Deluxe, featuring a duet with the singer of «Confessions», on Tuesday, August 27.
The song, produced by Camper, became the first official collaboration between R&B artists.
Earlier this year, Monet and Teyana Taylor paid tribute to Usher with an exciting performance of «Bad Girl» at the 2024 BET Awards ceremony, where Usher was honored with a lifetime achievement award.
In a statement about the track, Monet said: «'SOS (Sex on Sight)' is about desire. It’s about that sense of urgency you feel when you need love, physical touch, and quality attention! Sometimes that desire can be as urgent as being rescued from a natural disaster, or in this case, being rescued from your own sensual impulses».
«Like a storm, 'SOS' calls and warns the lover of an impending rain and welcomes the beautiful relief from that desire. It feels romantic, playful, passionate, and direct. Based on fantasy and the warmest tones of R&B. It feels timeless, and we hope you enjoy this journey!»
Monet’s new single was released shortly after the anniversary of her debut album Jaguar II, which was released on August 25, 2023, on Lovett Music and RCA Records. The 11-track project included the hit single «On My Mama», which topped the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart for two weeks and became her first solo hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, reaching 33rd place.
The singer-songwriter-producer was nominated for seven Grammy Awards in 2023, where she won the award for Best New Artist, Best R&B Album, and Best Non-Classical Engineering Album.
After winning one of the most competitive categories of the evening, Monet emotionally spoke about her long journey to success, saying: «This award was a 15-year aspiration. I moved to Los Angeles in 2009. And I love to compare myself to a plant that was planted… And my roots grew underground unnoticed for a long time. And today I feel like I’m finally sprouting above ground».
As for Usher, he is currently on his Past Present Future tour, performing classic hits from his 30-year career, as well as tracks from his latest album Coming Home, which coincided with his halftime performance at the Super Bowl
