At the Dancers Against Cancer 2026 gala held last week, renowned director and choreographer Vincent Paterson received the Vanguard Award. The ceremony took place at the Beverly Hilton hotel and was organized by Maks Chmerkovskiy, with the award presented to Paterson by Tony Selznick and Julie McDonald.
Vincent Paterson is known for his work with pop icons Michael Jackson and Madonna, having created some of the most memorable performances in pop culture, including «Smooth Criminal» and Jackson’s «Bad» tour, as well as the Blond Ambition tour and Madonna’s iconic «Vogue» performances.
During his acceptance speech, Paterson remarked, «Dance is the language I have spoken for over 50 years. It has opened my eyes to possibilities, given me the key to many creative doors, and inspired me to become the artist I am». Holding back tears, he added, «I'm sorry, I’m very emotional when I talk about Michael. I am so grateful that working with Michael and Madonna allowed me to realize that I contributed to changing pop culture».
The event was also attended by Michael Jackson’s younger sister, Janet Jackson.
