Owner of New York Times killed by in-laws in California
The CEO of the New York Times, 40-year-old Jonathan Makinsi, was shot by his in-laws in a park in Northern California on Saturday, September 26. According to police, Makinsi was involved in a child abuse case and had a conflict with his wife over custody of their children.

Makinsi was found dead in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds sports complex. Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots and saw a man and woman, believed to be the shooters, calmly leave the scene. Police soon arrested 77-year-old Shouyun Zhang and Shili Chen, Makinsi’s mother-in-law and father-in-law, who are now charged with suspicion of murder.

Makinsi, who led the engineering department of New York Times Games, joined the publication in 2023 after working at Splunk, UKG, and Oracle. While police did not specify possible motives for the crime, court documents indicate that there was a conflict between Makinsi and his wife, Candice Zhang, involving allegations of violence from both sides.

Zhang filed a lawsuit against Makinsi, claiming that he hit their son, leaving a handprint bruise on his face. Makinsi was charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse last year but denied all allegations. He also filed for a restraining order against Zhang, claiming that she once attacked him with a frying pan.

Zhang and Chen are being held without bail and are scheduled to appear in court on September 30. Information about legal representation for them is currently unavailable.
