The social network debuted in theaters on October 1, 2010, and made its young actors top stars. The drama about Facebook also received awards and nominations, making it one of the most notable films of that year. Over the next 15 years, speculation about a sequel became a constant topic of conversation in the entertainment world. Considering that its main character, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, continues to be a relevant topic of conversation, a sequel seems inevitable.

«You don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies», - reads the famous slogan. Adapted from Ben Mezrich’s 2009 book «The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal», - The Social Network focuses on Zuckerberg in 2003, when he was a sophomore at Harvard. The prominent programmer and genius becomes known and popular, creating Facebook, becoming a billionaire, and facing subsequent lawsuits.
Jesse Eisenberg played the role of Zuckerberg, Andrew Garfield as his business partner Eduardo Saverin, Justin Timberlake as Sean Parker, Armie Hammer as Cameron Winklevoss, and Rooney Mara as Erica Albright, among others. The screenplay was adapted for the screen by the great Aaron Sorkin from the TV series «The West Wing», - and the film was directed by David Fincher, who also directed «Panic Room» and «Gone Girl».
The film received eight Oscar nominations and won awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, Editing, and Music. At the Golden Globes, it won awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score. Eisenberg was nominated for Best Actor at both the 2011 Golden Globes and the Oscars, although he did not win, losing both times to Colin Firth for his outstanding performance in «The King’s Speech».
It is unclear whether a sequel to the 2010 film will be made, although in 2023 Fincher made a promising (though mysterious) statement about the possibility. «Aaron and I have discussed it, but, um… it’s a can of worms», - he told The Guardian in October 2023.
And according to an April 2024 report, Sorkin is working on a kind of quasi-sequel to the film. «Look, yes, I’m going to write about it», - he said during an episode of The Town podcast discussing the January 6, 2021 uprising, according to The Hollywood Reporter. «I blame Facebook for January 6». When asked why he blames Facebook, he replied, «You'll have to buy a movie ticket».
Sources close to the screenwriter confirmed that he is working on a «script related to The Social Network». They also noted that at that time the project was in the «early stages» and emphasized that there is currently no studio partner for the project
