In October 2018, plans for a remake of the film «Clueless» were announced. This remake transformed into a series focused on the character Dionne, played by Stacey Dash. The project then changed and became a sequel centered on Cher, which Peacock rejected earlier this year. From November 2018 to January 2019, a limited run of the musical «Clueless», - written by Amy Heckerling, was staged on Broadway. Heckerling planned to bring it to Broadway, but the pandemic disrupted those plans.
Several years have passed, and the revival of «Clueless» is back in the works. The musical has been reworked with original songs by CT Tunstall and Glenn Slater and opened in the West End last year. Meanwhile, the series that Peacock rejected is getting a second life on Paramount+. Alicia Silverstone is returning as Cher, Heckerling will be an executive producer, and filming is set to begin in Los Angeles next year. Here’s what Deadline reports:
The sequel series «Clueless» with Alicia Silverstone has found a new home—and has been greenlit. Paramount+ has taken on the project developed by Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, Jordan Weiss, and CBS Studios, in a limited series format. Filming is scheduled for 2027 in Los Angeles.
This marks the return of «Clueless» to its roots, as it is Paramount’s intellectual property. The series is a sequel to the cult classic teen comedy film from 1995 by Paramount Pictures, featuring Silverstone in the lead role. She will reprise her role as Cher Horowitz and will also serve as an executive producer for the sequel, which is a limited series that was previously in development at Peacock.
The core concept remains the same: the story takes place 30 years after the original film, and beloved Beverly Hills icon Cher Horowitz (Silverstone) has achieved much: she is successful in business and has mastered motherhood—until her daughter reaches school age, and Cher once again feels «clueless».
«Clueless is coming home», - said Jane Wiseman, head of original content at Paramount+. «31 years ago, Cher Horowitz, played by Alicia Silverstone, captivated audiences with her stylish persona, wit, and relentless optimism, making 'Clueless' a box office hit and an instant pop culture classic. We are especially proud to be filming this long-awaited series in Los Angeles, paying homage to its starring role in the original film and supporting the outstanding talent and crews of the city».
Last summer, the film celebrated its 30th anniversary with a screening on 35 mm film at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts, where the original cast and Heckerling gathered. «Clueless» was also recently added to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.
The sequel, focused on Cher as a mother, seems more logical than a modern remake of the film, especially considering that Cher’s mother died when she was an infant. There is plenty of material to work with here. A few years ago, I would have sighed at the thought of a reboot, but sequels like «The Clinic», - «Ella», - and «The Addams Family» have changed my mind. I am also looking forward to «Practical Magic 2» and «Romy and Michele 2». Maybe it’s my age, or perhaps the constant stream of reboots has finally worn me down, but I just crave nostalgia.
I can’t believe «Clueless» celebrated its 30th anniversary last year. I remember watching it in theaters just before starting middle school. I didn’t understand many of the references at the time, but I still loved the movie. A few years ago, I rewatched «Clueless», - «10 Things I Hate About You», - «Now and Then», - and «Girls». They are all undoubtedly products of their time, but overall still relevant. Speaking of which, I predict we will see a reboot of the series «Girls» with Lindsay Lohan by the end of the 2020s. Tina Fey may protest as much as she likes, but it’s a beloved franchise, and the 2024 remake of «Girls» was a failure. It’s only a matter of time before we get a new project
