HBO fans can rejoice as Reese Witherspoon reveals more details about returning to Monterey.
Nearly a year after her co-star Nicole Kidman revealed that work on the third season of Big Little Lies was in full swing, the star of «The Neighbor» gave a brief update on the progress of the show, including new material from author Liane Moriarty.
«Nicole and I are waiting», - said Witherspoon, 48, in an interview with E! News on the red carpet at Hello Sunshine on October 5. «We are waiting for Liane Moriarty. She will soon present something new. We are going back to the original author and returning to the original characters».
«It's also exciting because, I think, the kids are a little older now», - she continued. «So that might add another element. I haven’t read it yet».
Here’s what we know so far.
In November 2023, during a Q&A session at the LPGA event, Kidman noted that she «loved» working on the acclaimed HBO series and confirmed that she is actively working on the third season.
«I really loved Big Little Lies because it came into my life at a time when I had kids, and I thought I was going to retire», - said the actress. «And then this situation arose where Reese Witherspoon and I were able to make this series and create it. And all of you watched it and made it a huge success. And we will bring you a third season, just FYI».
The only problem was that fans were unsure if the filming process had already started with the entire cast. Other cast members — Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, and Zoe Kravitz — did not confirm that they had joined the third season. A potential release date was set for 2024, but production faced delays due to the 2023 strikes by WGA and SAG-AFTRA.
Kidman admitted that she may have shared the news a little prematurely when she announced the next season last November. «I got excited», - said the star. «But now we are! We are moving fast and furious, and Liane is presenting the book. Yes, and we are in good shape».
«We talked a lot about season 3, and unfortunately, our incredible director Jean-Marc Vallée passed away last year, and I just can’t imagine continuing without him», - explained the actress in a 2022 TikTok video.
At the moment, only Kidman and Witherspoon have confirmed their participation in the cast of the third season. Previously, other actors expressed doubts about returning to the set for the third season. In fact, Kravitz once said she «doubted» they would ever return to filming Big Little Lies.
Meryl Streep also played a significant role in the second season, so fans hope she will return, especially considering how her character and Nicole’s character ended in the finale of the second season.
At the end of the second season, Meryl’s character, Mary Louise, and Celeste Nicole clashed, and additional details about Perry’s death (played by Alexander Skarsgård) were revealed. It was revealed that Mary Louise lost control of the wheel, resulting in the accidental death of Perry’s brother. Celeste also hinted that Mary Louise emotionally and possibly physically abused Perry, which could have led to domestic violence.
The Monterey Five also presumably surrendered at the end of the episode when they approached the police station. This finale divided many viewers
