Now that Vice President Kamala Harris has chosen her vice presidential candidate, everyone wants to know more about Tim Walz. The Governor of Minnesota has decades of political experience and has been a strong supporter of the Biden-Harris administration throughout President Joe Biden’s term.
Hollywood Life has gathered all the details you need to know about Walz below.
Before starting his political career, Walz worked as a social studies teacher at Mankato West High School in Minnesota. He eventually became the football team coach, helping the team win its first state championship in 1999. That same year, Walz became a faculty advisor for the school’s gay-straight alliance.
Originally from West Point, Nebraska, Walz joined the Army National Guard in 1981 and served for 24 years. Walz achieved the rank of Command Sergeant Major by the end of his military service.
In 2004, Walz volunteered for John Kerry’s presidential campaign. Two years later, he announced his candidacy for Congress and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for Minnesota’s first district. Walz was re-elected in 2008.
Walz served in Congress until retiring in 2019 after being elected Governor of Minnesota. Since then, he has won two gubernatorial elections in the state.
Walz has been a strong supporter of the Biden-Harris administration. Shortly before being confirmed as Harris' vice presidential candidate in August 2024, he praised the President and Vice President for their commitment to bringing home Americans who were detained in other countries.
«As President Biden said, this was a feat of diplomacy — it also underscores the strength of our alliances», - Walz wrote in a tweet alongside Biden’s statement on the release of Americans detained in Russia. «The Biden-Harris administration continues to fulfill its promise to all Americans unlawfully detained abroad: we will never stop working on bringing you home».
The Democrat fights for a variety of freedoms in his state, including women’s reproductive rights, free school lunches for students, and strict gun laws. According to his X account, Walz once proudly told his followers, «If you’re looking for a state that protects reproductive freedoms, provides paid leave, offers free breakfast and lunch in school, and reduces the cost of child care, then come to Minnesota»
