In Southern California on Monday, September 16, another earthquake occurred — the second in less than five days.

On Thursday, September 12, an earthquake in Malibu shook a large part of Los Angeles County. Residents were shaken at around 7:30 am local time. Many immediately wondered about the magnitude of the quake. Although earthquakes in Los Angeles are not uncommon, recent tremors have increased local concern in recent years.

Here is everything you need to know about earthquakes and subsequent aftershocks.

Monday, September 16 — A preliminary earthquake with a magnitude of 3.6 occurred in the Malibu area around 4:22 am Pacific time at a depth of almost seven miles, according to the US Geological Survey. As of now, no injuries or damage have been immediately reported.

Thursday, September 12 — According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake on September 12 had a magnitude of 4.7. NBC Los Angeles reported that the initial magnitude was measured at 5.1, but was later downgraded to 4.7. No infrastructure damage or serious injuries were reported at the time of publication.

The California Geological Survey confirmed the earthquake. The tweet said: «An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 occurred off the coast of Malibu. Moderate tremors were felt at the epicenter and in western Los Angeles. Aftershocks are expected».

According to KTLA, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that some boulders and rocks rolled onto the Malibu Canyon Road in a tunnel near Piuma Road. This is where the epicenter was located. Officials began clearing the rocks from the scene in the morning.

Monday, September 16 — Eric Spillman from KTLA commented on the morning earthquake on Monday, saying, «It may be an aftershock from the earthquake that occurred a few days ago». He noted that the network’s studio on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood did not feel the jolt. However, according to the «Did you feel it?» map from the US Geological Survey, the earthquake was felt far away, as in Long Beach to the southeast and in Ventura to the northwest.

Thursday, September 12 — After the earthquake on Thursday, several small aftershocks were reported, including one with a magnitude of 2.8, which occurred at the epicenter of Malibu just two minutes after the initial earthquake. Officials warned residents of Malibu, Hermosa Beach, Anaheim, Santa Monica, and surrounding areas about possible subsequent tremors in the coming days.

During an earthquake, experts emphasize the importance of knowing the correct steps to protect yourself and minimize injuries. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) offers detailed recommendations on what to do during such events. Here are some key steps to take in case of an earthquake:
