Volcanoes in 2025: Eruptions of Kilauea and Etna, warnings from scientists

In just the first two months of 2025, natural disasters have literally shaken, scorched, and/or flooded regions around the world. From fires in Los Angeles to an earthquake in the Caribbean Basin, the year has started off challenging. Now several volcanoes are erupting lava, one of which is located in the United States. However, the lava flow is a sharp contrast to a full-scale eruption.
Below you will learn how many volcanic eruptions have occurred so far in 2025 and if there are any upcoming explosions.
The Kilauea volcano has been erupting intermittently since December 2024. In February 2025, lava once again began to rise in the air in the summit crater of the volcano inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, according to CBS News.
The US Geological Survey warned local residents that the dangers of the eruption «include volcanic gas emissions and windy dispersal of volcanic glass (Pele's hair), which could affect Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and nearby communities».
«Episode 9 of the Halemaumau eruption at the summit of Kilauea began at 10:16 am Hawaiian Standard Time today, February 11», - USGS added in a separate statement. «Lava is fountaining in the northern crater, feeding lava flows on the crater floor in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Each fountaining episode of this eruption lasts from several hours to more than a week».

Several days before the eruption in Hawaii, Europe’s highest volcano, Mount Etna, also erupted on February 8 and again two days later. Several sources reported that Etna began to show signs of an impending eruption, with ash emissions and several smaller Strombolian gas and magma explosions.
The most destructive volcanic eruptions were those of Mount Etna and Kilauea volcano. Thus, so far in 2025, there have been two volcanic eruptions.
The chain of volcanoes in the Pacific Ocean, known as the «Ring of Fire», - is the most active on Earth of all volcanoes. If a large-scale eruption occurs, it could cause significant damage to the Earth. Additionally, the Axial Seamount, located underwater 300 miles off the coast of Oregon, has reportedly shown signs of a future eruption. According to ABC News, scientists predict an eruption of Axial Seamount in 2025
