California Governor’s Election: Becerra vs. Hilton in 2026 California Governor’s Election: Becerra vs. Hilton in 2026
California is undergoing significant changes. With Governor Gavin Newsom’s term ending this year, residents have already voted in the 2026 primary elections for the governor’s race. Candidates are promising voters new measures to address housing affordability and the state’s crisis, and it all comes down to a contest between Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat Javier Becerra.

During his campaign, Becerra promises to stand up to Donald Trump and his policies if elected governor.

«Californians know what disasters are, but Donald Trump is a man-made natural disaster that attacks California residents every day», - Becerra asserts in his campaign promises. «As California’s Attorney General, Javier Becerra has sued the Trump administration over 120 times and achieved landmark victories defending Obamacare, working Californians, and Dreamers from attacks».

Hilton, for his part, is campaigning by claiming that the state is «infamously known for dystopian scenes of crime, chaos, and poverty», - and blames the «stunning incompetence of one-party Democratic rule» for the devastation caused by the fires in Los Angeles County in 2025. He promises to «make California golden again», - echoing Trump’s slogan «Make America Great Again».

Below are updates on the California gubernatorial primary elections.

Since this is a primary election, none of the candidates has been declared the sole winner. The new governor of California will be elected and announced in November 2026 after the general elections.

The two candidates with the most votes in the primary will advance to the general election this fall.

At the time of publication, Hilton is leading in the polls with 27.8 percent, according to CNN. Becerra trails the Republican with 25.4 percent; Steyer has 19 percent.

If the poll results remain the same after all votes are counted, Hilton and Becerra are likely to advance to the general election.

It is too early to say who might become the next governor of California. It all depends on the campaign and which candidate can convince state residents of positive changes after Newsom’s term ends
