The mayoral elections of New York are already underway to replace the current mayor Eric Adams. Polls opened on Tuesday, November 4, and will close later today for voters in all five boroughs as they cast their votes for candidate Zohran Mamdani, former governor Andrew Cuomo, or radio host Curtis Sliwa.

Yesterday, Donald Trump officially endorsed Cuomo in a surprising statement. Discouraging New Yorkers from voting for «communist» Mamdani, the Republican president wrote that he believes voters have «no choice» but to vote for the former governor of New York.

«If the communist Zohran Mamdani wins the mayoral election in New York, it is highly unlikely that I will allocate federal funds, other than the bare minimum, to my favorite first home, because, being a communist, this once great city has ZERO chances of success or even survival!» Trump wrote via Truth Social on Monday, November 3. «With a communist at the helm, things can only get worse, and I don’t want to send bad money after good».

Trump added that he believes New York will become «a complete and absolute economic and social disaster if Mamdani wins» and claimed that «his principles have been tested for over a thousand years and have never been successful».

«I would much rather see a Democrat win who has a track record of success than a communist with no experience and a complete and utter failure», - Trump continued. «He was nothing as a deputy, ranked last in his class, and as mayor, potentially, of the Greatest City in the World, HE HAS NO CHANCE of restoring it to its former glory!»

The former host of «The Apprentice» also said that voting for Sliwa «(who looks much better without a beret!) is a vote for Mamdani».

«Whether you like Andrew Cuomo personally or not, you really have no choice», - Trump concluded, adding, «You must vote for him and hope that he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!»

Below are the latest updates from the 2025 New York City mayoral elections.

As previously noted, Mamdani, Cuomo, and Sliwa are running for mayor of New York City. Cuomo initially ran as a Democrat but switched to independent when Mamdani won the Democratic nomination. Sliwa is running as a Republican.

Polls opened at 6:00 a.m. Eastern Time and will close at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time. So for those voters rushing to the polls after work, they have until 9:00 p.m. to get in line and cast their vote.

Throughout the race, Mamdani has been the favorite to win. Young voters across all five boroughs have been voting early, and Mamdani has gained a large following on social media over the past year.

Since the polls close at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time, the votes should be counted by midnight on November 4, 2025, but this depends on various factors. Typically, the winners of the election are announced by the Associated Press.

The new mayor of America’s largest city will take office in January 2025. Traditionally, each new mayor is sworn in on New Year’s Eve immediately after midnight on the cusp of the new year
