The presidential elections are here! The race for the White House between Democratic candidates Kamala Harris and Tim Walz and Republican candidates Donald Trump and J.D. Vance will conclude today, November 5, 2024, as the polls close. In the weeks leading up to Election Day, many votes were cast both in person and by mail.
As Election Day approaches, many public institutions are closed to allow citizens who have not yet voted to visit the polls. But which places are closed? Do these closures include schools? Find out more below.
Some states, including Florida and New York, have decided to cancel classes in schools on Election Day. This is partly because some consider it a federal holiday, while others have designated schools as polling places.
According to the National School Safety and Security Service, «While practices in past years often allowed schools to be more open and calm on Election Day, security threats in the post-Columbine and post-9/11 world are increasingly causing concern for many school administrators, staff, and parents about the vulnerability of their schools».
Although Election Day is considered a federal holiday in some states, others do not mark it as such, meaning that some businesses will remain open on November 5. For example, the United States Postal Service, banks, retail stores, and motor vehicle departments may continue to operate in some areas.
According to the Movement for Progress, states that recognize Election Day as a federal holiday include Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, New York, West Virginia, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, New Jersey, Delaware, Indiana, Kentucky, Rhode Island, and Virginia.
Results will be determined after all votes are counted. This may happen by the end of election night, or it may take several days, depending on the length of the counting process. In some cases, recounts may be necessary, especially in critical states such as Pennsylvania.
In 2020, when Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were elected President and Vice President of the United States, their victory was not officially announced until November 7, even though Election Day was November 3 of that year
