Willow Smith has been in the spotlight of Hollywood since childhood, but she is ready to «prove» critics wrong who call her a «child of a famous family». As the only daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, 23-year-old Willow posed for a photoshoot in Allure magazine, where she posed in a bold red outfit.
In one of the cover shots, released on Thursday, May 2, Willow’s outfit was presented as a red cut-out ensemble consisting of a top and a mini skirt with leggings. To complete the look, Willow was adorned with bright red makeup.
In another shot, the «21st Century Girl» artist was transformed into a bold leopard version, shimmering with gold, blue, and red accents on her face. For the cover, Willow’s hair was styled in a dramatic, statuesque fashion.
During the interview, Willow talked about her new album «empathogen» and about growing up in the spotlight as a young black woman. Despite initially being known as the daughter of famous parents, Willow acknowledges that she has «privileges», - but she can still connect with her fans.
«Being black in America, even with privileges — which I never deny that I have — you’re still black», - Willow said, adding, «And I love being black. People look at me and say, 'Okay, her parents are so-and-so, but she’s still like me. She still has brown skin.' And we all know that doesn’t exempt you from anything, and it’s a place for connection».
As for those who call Willow a «child of a famous family», - the «Whip My Hair» singer admitted that it is her «shortcoming», - but emphasized that she has progressed in her career without her parents' help.
«I truly believe that my spirit is strong, and that even if my parents weren’t who they are, I would still be a wanderer and a crazy thinker», - Willow explained. «I definitely think a little bit of insecurity made me work even harder, because people think the only reason I’m successful is because of my parents. It made me work hard to prove them wrong. But these days, I don’t need to prove anything to anyone».
In addition to her famous family, Willow also noted another fear: «being perceived as difficult» in the entertainment industry.
«In this society, a woman who knows what she wants is always perceived as 'difficult'», - she said. «I'm not difficult, I just know what I want. And I’m willing to sacrifice the peace of the moment to achieve that goal»
