He studied media arts at Royal Holloway, University of London, and then obtained a master’s degree in fine arts in digital art. Josh worked at Reddit and Pinterest before «Wordle» became a global phenomenon.
The name of the game is a play on words on Josh’s surname. According to The Verge, Josh revealed that he initially considered naming the game «Mr. Bugs' Wordy Nugz».
«It's true: I was going to call 'Wordle' Mr. Bugs' Wordy Nugz», - he previously shared on stage. «If I had named the game Mr. Bugs, I don’t think it would have been successful».
During the development of the «Wordle» prototype, Josh only showed it to close friends and family.
«I was trying to make something that was authentic to me. I was trying to create something for the people I love», - explained Josh, according to The Verge. «It just so happened that other people loved it too».
Josh advises other innovators to follow their own path and avoid repeating someone else’s invention, like he did.
«Don't try to make 'Wordle.' Do what excites you and what matters to you», - he suggested. «And everything else will follow from that»
