The series «Yellowjackets» is already on its third season, and viewers cannot get enough of its intense plot and strong characters. Co-creator of «Yellowjackets» Ashley Lyle previously told Deadline that she and her husband Bart Nickerson did not want their series to be seen solely as a creation of young adult literature (YA).
«There's a difference between a show where teenagers are meant for teenage viewers, and a show where teenagers are meant for a more adult audience», - Ashley emphasized. «We always point to '13 Reasons Why,' which is very much about young girls, but doesn’t feel YA. However, I think networks are very protective of their brands and are not inclined to look at things that way. Shows about teenagers or with teenagers who aspire to be something other than a classic YA show often scare people a bit. It’s something we encountered when pitching it».

«Yellowjackets» is not based on one true story. However, it draws some aspects from real stories, including the 1972 tragedy of Flight 571, carrying a Uruguayan rugby team on board. The plane crashed in the Andes mountains, leaving 29 people stranded in the middle of nowhere. (A separate film called «Alive» is based on this incident). Additionally, the show is loosely inspired by the 19th-century story of the Donner Party, which, like the survivors of Flight 571, involved resorting to cannibalism, according to Forbes.
