Julie Andrews is a bright star of theater and cinema, whose career spans several decades. She has appeared in numerous classic musicals, such as «Thoroughly Modern Millie», - «The Sound of Music», - and «Mary Poppins», - for which she won an Oscar. However, fans who grew up in the early 2000s may remember her more for her roles in modern classics like «The Princess Diaries» and the popular Netflix series «Bridgerton».

Throughout her career, Julie has been married twice: to Tony Walton and Blake Edwards. Although her marriage to Tony ended in divorce, she was married to Blake until his death in 2010. Learn more about both of Julie’s husbands.

Julie married British costume and set designer Tony Walton on May 10, 1959, in Weybridge, Surrey. The actress first met Tony while performing in «Humpty Dumpty» in 1948. As a child, Julie often performed with her mother and stepfather, and at the age of 13, she became the youngest participant in the Royal Gala Concert.

After getting to know Tony and developing their relationship, she married him at the age of 24. They have one daughter named Emma, who now works as a children’s author. Julie gave birth to Emma in 1962, shortly before she became a star thanks to «Mary Poppins». By the way, Tony designed the iconic costumes for that film.

The couple eventually divorced in 1968, and Julie married director Blake Edwards (more on that below). Tony passed away on March 2, 2022. Although their marriage did not last long, Julie still remembered her love for him in an interview with PEOPLE after his death. «Tony was my dearest and oldest friend. He taught me to see the world with new eyes, and his talent was simply monumental. I will miss him more than I can say».

She added, «We are a large blended family, and in embracing each other, we find comfort in knowing that he lives on not only in his children and grandchildren but also in the memories of thousands of people who appreciated his warmth and generosity, as well as the magnificent gifts he left us. The gifts of theater and film, ballet and opera, graphic arts and illustration».

Julie’s second marriage was to director Blake Edwards, who was also a producer and screenwriter, in 1969. In a 2015 interview with «Good Morning Britain», - Julie recalled that she met Blake ten years before they exchanged vows—like «ships passing in the night at some event».

They then met again, locking eyes at an intersection in Los Angeles while driving in opposite directions from the same therapist’s office. «I was going one way, and he was going the other», - Julie recounted. «He rolled down his window after smiling a few times and said, 'Are you going to where I just came from?' … Very cliché, sorry about that».

Additionally, in an interview with Diane Sawyer, Julie admitted that she was afraid she was «trying very hard not to fall in love with him». For Blake—director of classic films like «Breakfast at Tiffany’s» and «The Pink Panther"—their meeting was «wonderfully Hollywood».

At the time of this «romantic encounter», - both were married (Julie to Tony Walton). In 1967, they both divorced their spouses and reconnected, beginning to date after their divorces were finalized.

Blake and Julie married at her home in November 1969, two years after their relationship began. They continued to raise their children together (he had two children, Jennifer and Jeffrey, from his first marriage to Patricia Walker). They also adopted two daughters, Amy and Joanna, who were orphans from Vietnam. Moreover, they lived in different countries, having homes in Los Angeles, London, and Gstaad, Switzerland.

Blake passed away from pneumonia complications in 2010 at the age of 88 after battling chronic fatigue syndrome. At the time of his death, they had been married for 41 years
