Julianna Hough opens up about her journey out of the closet.
«Coming out of the closet is one of the most vulnerable and powerful actions you can take», - said the Dancing with the Stars host during an interview on The Jamie Kern Lima Show podcast on August 27, providing fans with an update on her sexual orientation almost five years after she first shared that she was «not straight».
«For me, it was more about it not mattering if you’re straight, gay, bi, or queer. It’s more about knowing what love is. I love people, and I don’t know who I feel sexual attraction towards, but I choose you».
«I started seeing people, their hearts, their beauty, and their essence in a way that I realized, wow, I love people. I don’t know if it’s sexual attraction or some other attraction, but I just see people. It was such a beautiful revelation».
Back in 2019, in an interview with Women’s Health, the 36-year-old actress mentioned a conversation with her then-husband, Canadian hockey player Brooks Laich, where she asked, «You know I’m not straight, right?»
«And he replied, 'Sorry, what?' I said, 'I'm not straight. But I choose to be with you,'» Hough recalled.
«I think with my husband now, there’s a safety in me unpacking all of this, and there’s no fear in expressing things that I was afraid to admit or felt shame or guilt about because of what I was told or how I was raised», - she added.
Hough, who married Laich in 2017 and finalized their divorce in 2022, said in the same interview on August 27 that their marriage was «the best thing that could have happened to me at that time».
«What I needed then was a reunion with my 10-year-old self. At 10, I needed security and almost a father figure to provide a stable foundation of stability. A lot of our dynamic was that it was a little girl who needed a stable man. He created a wonderful foundation for me to be that little girl».
But it was this dynamic, as Hough began to heal and «become more of a woman», that led her to understand that they needed different things.
«I really started to change, evolve, and ask myself what I believe in»
