Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffrey Williams, was released from prison on Thursday after reaching a plea deal in the YSL racketeering case, which is now recognized as the longest criminal case in Georgia history.

Here’s everything you need to know about when he was first incarcerated and more.

The rapper had been in prison since his arrest in May 2022. Young Thug was arrested on May 9 on multiple charges related to gang involvement along with 27 others, including Gunna, as part of a 56-count indictment linked to the YSL label.

He had a bond hearing a month after his arrest, but was denied bond. Prosecutors claimed he was the head of the operation and called him the «most dangerous» member of the alleged gang, arguing that he should not be released.

Young Thug was held in custody following the 56-count indictment for violating the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.

He was identified as the leader of YSL, which, according to prosecutors, although initially referring to his label Young Stoner Life Records, also stands for Young Slime Life, an Atlanta gang associated with the national Bloods. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis describes this gang as violent, with a history of crimes dating back to 2012, including murders, robberies, car thefts, burglaries, and assaults.

More than a year passed after his 2022 arrest before a jury was formed, and the YSL RICO trial finally began on November 27, 2023. However, the trial faced serious issues, including one co-defendant being stabbed in the Fulton County jail, a witness testifying while intoxicated, the removal of one judge, and the recusal of another.

One notable moment at the start of the trial was when Thug’s lawyer, Brian Steel, presented an alternative definition of his client’s name as «Truly Humble Under God». He also claimed that «Pushin P» means «pushing positivity» and that YSL was named after the fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent.

Another viral moment occurred in January when a video showed his legal team playing Rich Gang’s song «Lifestyle», - and most people in the room were not reacting to the rapper’s 2014 hit.

On October 31, Young Thug pleaded guilty to six charges: one count of participating in criminal street gang activity, three counts of violating Georgia’s Controlled Substances Act, one count of carrying a firearm during the commission of a crime, and one count of possessing a machine gun.

Judge Paige Reese Whitaker sentenced him to 15 years of probation without serving prison time. «I know you have talent, and if you decide to continue rapping, you need to try to use your influence to make kids understand that this is not the way and that there are ways to avoid poverty other than connecting with the powerful guy on the corner selling drugs», - the judge remarked
