Could this be the end of an era? MTV fans were shocked to learn that some of its channels will be closing by the end of the year. The news came after Paramount Global, the owner of MTV, merged with Skydance Media, leading to the shocking cancellation of «The Late Show with Stephen Colbert» on CBS. CBS stated that the cancellation of the late show was a «financial decision».

Launched in 1981, MTV became the hottest channel for premiering music videos, with one of the most memorable releases being Michael Jackson’s «Thriller». MTV also broadcasted the Live Aid concert in 1985 and introduced the MTV Video Music Awards, a highly anticipated event on the network.

Here’s what we know so far about the closure of the multi-channel MTV and what it means for the network.

MTV is owned by Paramount Media Networks, which merged with Skydance Media in 2025.

No, MTV is not closing down completely. However, rumors quickly spread online after the BBC reported that several well-known channels in the UK and parts of Europe are closing.

Five music channels in the UK and various regions of Europe will be closed by December 31, 2025: MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, MTV Live, and Club MTV.

Former MTV host Simon Angel told BBC News, «I'm very sad, and I’m a little bit in disbelief, and I know it’s been a long time coming».

«We need to support these artists, and we all need to dance and listen to music again», - Simon continued. «And I know we’re doing it online in our own bubbles, but MTV was a place where everything came together. So it really breaks my heart».

American MTV channels, including MTV, MTV2, MTV Live, and MTV Classic, do not seem to be affected by the upcoming changes.

Neither Paramount nor Skydance have explained the reason for the multi-channel cancellation, but MTV has made a significant shift towards reality shows in the 2000s. In 2023, employees of MTV News were laid off, leading to company-wide layoffs
