Perhaps the worst thing that can happen to a traveler is the cancellation of their flight, but the closure of an airport is even worse. On March 21, 2025, Heathrow in London temporarily closed, halting numerous flights and therefore passengers from flying. Although several airlines, including some American companies, offered waivers for those affected by the airport closure, damage had already been done. So when will Heathrow reopen to the public?

Below are updates on the closure of Heathrow and the reasons for it.

On March 21, Heathrow announced its closure in a statement, according to multiple sources.

«As firefighters continue to deal with the incident, we have no clarity on when power can be reliably restored», - the airport statement read. «To ensure the safety of our passengers and colleagues, we have no choice but to close Heathrow until 23:59 on March 21, 2025».

Heathrow added in the statement that they expect «significant disruptions in the coming days» due to the closure.

Heathrow closed due to a fire at the nearby North Hyde electrical substation in Hayes, West London.

At the time of publication, Heathrow was still marked as «temporarily closed» on Google. However, the airport announced that it is gradually resuming operations and restarting some flights.

Approximately 12 hours after the closure of Heathrow, the airport issued a public statement advising travelers that it was reopening. However, the airport recommended traveling to Heathrow only if the customer’s airline «recommended [them] to do so», - according to CBS News.

«We will now be working with airlines to repatriate passengers who were directed to other airports in Europe», - the updated statement indicated. «We hope to resume full operations tomorrow and will provide further information soon».

According to the airport statement, Heathrow is expected to fully reopen on Saturday, March 22. A representative also noted that «as Europe’s busiest airport, Heathrow consumes as much energy as a small town, so returning to full and safe operation takes time», - according to CBS.

It is unclear how the fire at the nearby substation started. Police stated that there are currently «no signs of malicious intent», - although counter-terrorism units will still conduct an investigation, according to CBS
