Robert F. Kennedy Jr., known as RFK Jr., may become the next Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) in the United States. The politician, appointed by Donald Trump to head the HHS, advocates for changes in the management of public healthcare in the US, especially in vaccination. As RFK Jr. has spoken at several public events and Senate Finance Committee hearings, the public is interested in his own health. For many years, people have wondered why RFK’s voice sounds hoarse when he speaks.

Learn all about RFK Jr.'s health below.

RFK Jr. is the nephew of the late President John F. Kennedy. He is also one of the 11 children of Ethel and Robert F. Kennedy Sr.

RFK Jr., who is married to actress Cheryl Hines, suffers from a condition called spasmodic dysphonia, which he developed at the age of 40. This condition has led to tremors in his voice when speaking. Kennedy previously visited Kyoto, Japan, «to undergo a procedure… that is not available here in the United States», - he told Vladislav «DJ Vlad» Lyubovny in an interview. Kennedy claimed that the procedure involved the installation of a «titanium bridge between the vocal cords».

Spasmodic dysphonia is a voice disorder that causes sudden involuntary spasms affecting the vocal cords, causing them to stiffen and close, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. The most common form of the disease is known as adductor spasmodic dysphonia.

«Spasms interfere with the vibration of the vocal cords and the production of sound», - Johns Hopkins reports. «Stress can exacerbate spasms. Speech sounds strained and requires effort. Spasms usually do not occur during whispering, laughter, singing, speaking at a high pitch, or speaking while inhaling».

During his college years, Kennedy experienced heart problems that he attributed to lack of sleep, caffeine, and stress, according to The Times. Additionally, RFK Jr. also experienced short-term memory problems, as he previously told The Times.

«I have clear cognitive function issues. I have problems with short-term memory, and I have problems with long-term memory that affect me», - RFK Jr. said.

Kennedy also stated that his cognitive function problems are caused by «a worm that got into [his] brain and ate part of it, and it died»
