«Earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 in the Philippines: casualties and destruction»
8 june 2026 в 22:13
A magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred off the coast of the Philippines, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey. The powerful underwater tremor triggered tsunami warnings in some areas of the Philippines and neighboring countries, although most of these were later canceled.
The earthquake struck off the southern coast of Mindanao, the second-largest island in the Philippines. The epicenter was located in waters near Sarangani province, south of General Santos City, a densely populated area in the southern part of the country.
The tremor occurred on Monday, June 8, 2026, at approximately 7:37 local time. Shaking was felt across much of Mindanao and in some areas of neighboring Indonesia.
According to the latest reports, at least 35 people have died as a result of the earthquake. Many of the casualties are linked to collapsed buildings, falling debris, and landslides triggered by the strong tremors. Authorities warn that the death toll may rise as rescue operations continue.
More than 140 people have been injured, with some sources reporting the number of injured to be over 200, as emergency services continue to assess the damage. Most injuries were caused by falling debris, collapsed buildings, and landslides.
The earthquake occurred as a result of movement along a major fault system in the Cotabato Trench, a subduction zone off the coast of Mindanao. The Philippines is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region where several tectonic plates meet, making the country particularly vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic activity
