The series «Gilmore Girls» continues to be a cult favorite among viewers, but not all plot lines were equally successful. In interviews, the actors shared their opinions on the strangest twists in the storyline.
The show aired from 2000 to 2007 and tells the story of mother and daughter, Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut. In 2016, they reunited in the limited series «A Year in the Life» on Netflix. Over seven seasons, viewers witnessed the characters' growth, their adventures in education, careers, and personal lives, but not all of their actions were understood by fans or the actors themselves.
Lorelai and Rory experienced a rift in their relationship at the end of the fifth season when Rory dropped out of Yale after her mentor, the father of her boyfriend Logan Huntzberger, questioned her abilities. Rory moved in with her grandparents and had little contact with her mother until the end of the sixth season when she decided to return to university. According to Lauren Graham, it was difficult to portray this situation, as it seemed «out of character» for both characters.
In the seventh season, Lane’s life, Rory’s friend, changed dramatically when she learned she was pregnant with twins. Actress Keiko Agena noted that events in Lane’s life progressed too quickly, and she wished her character could focus more on music.
Scott Patterson, who plays Luke, talked about a scene in the third season where Lorelai and her friend Sookie discussed his appearance. He admitted that it was uncomfortable and humiliating, as his character was presented as an object.
Jared Padalecki, who played Dean, shared that filming his wedding to Lindsay at the age of 19 was a «nightmare» for him, as he was not ready for that scene.
Lorelai and Luke, after much hesitation, began dating in the fifth season but broke up before the wedding due to Lorelai’s ultimatum. Graham noted that this decision felt «out of character» for her character.
In the seventh season, Lorelai married Christopher, Rory’s father, in Paris, which also seemed strange to the actress. She admitted that she even forgot about this event, as she believed Lorelai could not get married without her daughter’s presence. However, this marriage turned out to be short-lived, as Lorelai still had feelings for Luke.
