Val’s daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed to The New York Times that he died of pneumonia and had recovered from throat cancer.

Val and Cher famously dated in the 1980s, and despite their breakup, they remained friends. She wrote on Twitter, jokingly calling the late actor «annoying», - but also a «great friend».

«Val, we will miss you», - Cher wrote. «You were funny, crazy, annoying, a GREAT FRIEND, the kids loved you, BRILLIANT like Mark Twain, BRAVE here during your illness».

According to a statement obtained by People, Jim Carrey, Val’s co-star in the movie «Batman Forever», - said: «Today I remember Val Kilmer with great admiration for him as a person and as a talent of his generation, who left us an enviable legacy of unforgettable acting performances. Director Francis Ford Coppola honored Val’s memory by posting an old photo with him on Instagram. The caption read: «Val Kilmer was the most talented actor in his high school, and that talent only grew throughout his life.
